Reason 1,302 for why I love my job with Thrivent? They encourage community work (or more accurately, they expect it). Last week I took most of Friday off to do a Day of Compassion with my long-time mentor and life guru, Rollie Johnson. We went over to Northern Cass with some other radically kind and incredible leaders (Frederick Edwards and Alexis Bachmeier) to do some soul work with the kids. This event isn't about mutual funds, disability insurance, or crafting a legacy for retirement... It's about how to apologize to your friend after ignoring her at lunch last month. It's about how to regularly thank your teachers for all of the incredibly challenging work that they do each day. It's about bringing compassion into the everyday world of school. I love my job because I get to stay out and about in the community, wherever the community asks me to be. Want to hear about other ways Thrivent supports our community? Let's get coffee!

Do you remember when cameras only had 25 opportunities to capture a moment? When each click mattered? When you would carefully frame the shot and double-check that the flash was on? Over the past few years, I've rediscovered this mindset and fallen in love with it. We have a world where selfies, portraits, and snapchats rob the value of a photo and we have duplicate upon duplicate hunting for the perfect take… Yet I’ve found that limiting the number of photos to just 25 in a disposable camera yields a greater harvest than any iPhone camera ever will. I've made it my goal to share this approach with as many people as possible. Imagine going on a family trip where everyone could only take a certain number of pictures. How would that change your experience at Disneyland? Where would you position your loved ones for the perfect photo in front of Mount Rushmore? Does it really matter if you don't know what to do with your hands? Why not ask grandpa to pose for a special photo with your youngest? Perhaps it would hold more meaning. Right now, you can purchase a disposable Fuji camera at Walmart for about $13.00. That's the cost of a meal at Subway, and it's a much more worthwhile investment. Trust me, I'm a financial advisor. The photos I'm sharing today are from my time in Charleston, South Carolina, with a group of fellow Human Resource officers. I consider many of these people to be like family, so browsing through these photos feels important. These photos are made perfect through imperfection. Quirky smiles, goofy hugs, moments in the rain, and times spent on the beach. I'm sharing these photos with you all as a challenge. During your next family gathering, I encourage you to get a disposable camera and entrust your loved ones with capturing memories that truly matter (especially the children!) When we break free from our obsession with taking photos for the sake of convenience, we uncover some truly special moments gifted to us by an awesome God. Let's strive to sanctify our day-to-day lives and capture moments that truly matter, both in and out of our professional realm.
