As Spring rolls through and another class comes up on their graduation date, I look back on the things I wish I would have known when I walked off that stage and into the real world! There's no college course for how to be a responsible adult, and once I realized just how many responsibilities I had, I felt completely lost! I had a stable job but no idea how to properly save, how much I should be spending, what insurance I should have, what benefits were included in my job, or where to even learn any of these things. As I have progressed in my career and grown as an adult, here are some of the biggest things I wish I knew on graduation day: Write out a budget! Understanding where your money is going. Know how much is going to your expenses every month, so you can better plan to save and have fun! Have an emergency fund! A month after graduating I had the breaks on my car go out, and it cost what felt like a million dollars to repair because I hadn't been saving for the unexpected costs! Small things like that can become big issues if you don't plan for them. Understand your benefits! When I first started looking for jobs coming out of school, I was just looking at the wages and what I could earn, not looking at the full picture! Lots of young people don't ask enough questions about what their benefits mean and how they can maximize them! Know what your employer offers, and understand how they can help you reach your goals! At the end of the day, it all comes down to having a plan. Understand what your goals are, and start taking the steps to achieve them! The best preparation for tomorrow starts with doing your best today! What are some things you wish you would have known sooner? #budgeting #retirement #financialplanning #graduation
