ACTION TEAM SPOTLIGHT!! Our family started More Than A Meal in 2020, during the pandemic - one week before Thanksgiving, when we realized that many people would go without a Thanksgiving meal due to the pandemic. I decided we had to take action. I put the word out on Facebook garage sale sites and such, that if anyone needed a Thanksgiving meal, we would deliver it for free the day before Thanksgiving. I thought we might get a few requests. But when my husband came home that day, and I told him what I did, he said, "What are we going to do if we get 100 meal requests?" And I said, "We'll deliver 100 meals. God will provide. He always does". And man did He ever. We had over 150 meal requests come in! We rallied the troops. Friends and family donated their time and money to help pull it off. Our kitchen was full of love and laughter, all masked and gloved up - ready to send out some love & meals. My son's hockey team even volunteered to deliver the meals! We somehow pulled it off! And we vowed that as long as there's a need, we will continue this ministry. The following year, we partnered with our church, The Haven at Sandy Hook UMC, to utilize their commercial kitchen to be able to serve even more of our neighbors in need. And last year, we served over 1,400 meals in Bartholomew County! We are so thankful for the Thrivent grants, as they allow us to have seed money to get the fundraising going and to help fund this ministry and spread the word to our neighbors that they matter, they are seen, and they are loved. Through Thrivent Action Team funding, Road Map to Growth was able to support two meaningful outreach events in our community. 1. Goodie Bags for Teenagers at Valley Vista Mental Health Treatment Facility Road Map to Growth prepared and distributed goodie bags for teenagers currently receiving treatment at Valley Vista Mental Health Treatment Facility. The bags were intended to provide encouragement, care, and a reminder that they are not alone during a difficult season. The Thrivent Action Team funds helped make it possible to purchase the items needed to create these thoughtful gifts. 2. War Wall Course at Dove Recovery House Road Map to Growth also taught a “War Wall” course for women currently staying at Dove Recovery House in Columbus, Indiana. The course focused on learning how to take our thoughts captive and recognize the importance of addressing negative thoughts with truth and intentionality. Thanks to Thrivent Action Team funding, we were able to purchase the materials needed for the course, allowing each participant to engage in the teaching and create her own War Wall tool. Both events gave Road Map to Growth an opportunity to serve women and young people through encouragement, practical resources, and faith-based support. 👗 Thrivent Action Team Highlight: Glass Slipper 👗 We love seeing Thrivent Action Teams bring people together for a purpose that makes a lasting impact! Shiloh used her Thrivent Action Team to help support Glass Slipper, a local ministry that provides free prom dresses to young women in need. With a donated space ready to become a dressing and shopping area, volunteers came together to help transform it into a welcoming place where young women can find a dress and feel special for an important night. Volunteers helped paint, lay flooring, create dressing room areas, provide furniture and supplies, and even shared a meal together while serving! What started as an empty space is becoming a place filled with hope, dignity, and the opportunity for young women to make special memories. ❤️ This is what we love about Thrivent Action Teams—bringing people together to turn generosity into action! 🤩Thrivent Action Team Highlight: Loaves & Fishes Kids Kitchen 🤩 What happens when you combine cooking, learning, and serving others? Loaves & Fishes Kids Kitchen! ❤️ Bethany, a childcare director, wanted to give her students more than just traditional classroom learning. She created an opportunity to teach children practical food skills, build confidence in the kitchen, and discover the joy of serving others. With the help of a Thrivent Action Team, her students were able to assemble and donate 60 kits (30 meals and 30 desserts) to a local food pantry. And this was just one part of a much bigger summer effort: 540 kits were donated Overall!!! Each kit includes the ingredients, a recipe card, and a meal-time prayer. This project is helping children discover new foods, gain independence, and learn that they can make a difference in the lives of others—even at a young age.
