Rotary Heart and Sole

About the Project: The Rotary Heart & Sole Project, established in August 2019, provides new socks and tennis shoes to students in the Jackson-Madison County School System. Partnering with Samaritan’s Feet, recipients receive a new pair of socks and shoes, and their feet are washed by Rotarians, community leaders, and volunteers.

Inspiration: Shelley Hayes, Director of Corporate Health and Wellness at West Tennessee Healthcare, initiated this project after learning about the need for shoes in the local school system in 2017. As a Rotarian, Shelley felt this mission aligned with the Rotary motto, “Service above self,” and worked with three local clubs to make it a reality.

How It Started: The idea began during a field trip planning meeting at LIFT Wellness Center, where it was discovered that some students lacked proper footwear. Shelley took action, forming a committee and collaborating with local leaders to address this issue.

The Impact: The first distribution in December 2019 provided heartwarming moments, with children expressing joy and gratitude for their new shoes. Stories of children experiencing their first pair of new tennis shoes and the emotional impact on volunteers highlight the project's significance.

Join the Effort: The Rotary Heart & Sole Project continues to make a difference in the community. Join us in supporting this mission and bringing smiles to the faces of children in need.
