I’m a Lake Elmo–based financial advisor who helps individuals and families across the East Metro and western Wisconsin, including Woodbury, St. Paul, Oakdale, and Hudson, WI, build personalized, tax-smart financial strategies. Financial planning is about more than managing numbers; it’s about creating peace of mind, protecting what matters most, and making confident decisions aligned with your life and values.

I work closely with individuals and families to help them build and manage their wealth with clarity, purpose, and long-term confidence. Whether you’re just getting started, preparing for retirement, or navigating a major life transition, my role is to help you create a financial strategy aligned with your real life, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Should You Reduce Investment Risk as You Get Closer to Retirement? One of the biggest questions people face as they approach retirement is whether they should continue pursuing investment growth or begin placing greater emphasis on protecting what they’ve accumulated. The answer isn’t necessarily one or the other. During your working years, you may have decades to recover from market downturns. But as retirement approaches, your investment timeline and financial priorities can begin to change. Why investment risk matters more near retirement Market fluctuations can have a greater impact when you’re preparing to begin withdrawals from your investments. Selling investments during a market downturn to cover living expenses can make it harder for your portfolio to recover. This is one reason retirement planning often involves evaluating how much money should remain invested for long-term growth and how much might be better positioned for stability and near-term income needs. Finding the right balance between growth and security Moving toward retirement doesn’t necessarily mean eliminating investment risk. Retirement could last 25 or 30 years, making continued growth an important consideration. Inflation, healthcare expenses and changing lifestyle needs can all affect how much money you’ll need over time. At the same time, having a portion of your assets in more predictable investments may help provide confidence and flexibility. The appropriate balance depends on several factors, including your retirement timeline, income sources, withdrawal needs, risk tolerance and overall financial situation. The question worth asking Instead of focusing only on which investment might generate the highest return, consider a different question. What do I need each portion of my money to accomplish? Some assets may be intended for long-term growth. Others may support near-term spending, provide liquidity or help create a more predictable source of retirement income. Understanding those different purposes can help guide your investment decisions. Ultimately, retirement planning isn’t simply about maximizing returns. It’s about developing a strategy that supports the lifestyle you want while managing the risks that come with it. See thrivent.com/social for important disclosure information.

What are you actually saving for? We spend a lot of time talking about 401(k)s, investments, taxes and how much we should be saving. But eventually, the money is supposed to do something. Maybe it’s retiring earlier. Traveling more. Helping your kids. Buying a cabin. Or simply having more time to spend in places you love with people you care about. The numbers matter. But what those numbers allow YOU to do matters more. That’s what the plan should be built around. #FinancialPlanning #PersonalFinance See thrivent.com/social for important disclosure information.

Should I be putting more into my 401(k) or saving somewhere else? I get some version of this question all the time. And my answer usually starts with another question. What are YOU trying to accomplish? Retirement isn’t your only financial goal. Maybe you want to retire early. Help your kids. Buy a second home. Travel more. Or simply have money available before retirement. Your 401(k) can be an important part of the plan. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be the entire plan. Having money in different places, with different tax treatment and different access, can give you more options later. Sometimes it’s just as important to have money that’s flexible, accessible and still working for you. Don’t just save more. Save with a purpose. See thrivent.com/social for important disclosure information.
