Growing up in Appleton, WI taught me the Midwest values of hard work, honesty, and the importance of community. As a young man, I felt compelled to “go west and explore,” which led me to the University of Montana, where I studied Communications, spent most weekends hiking, and met my wife, Ashley.
After graduation, a series of events took us to Washington, D.C., where I spent five years working in public policy while Ashley taught 1st grade in D.C. public schools. Before starting a family, we joined the Peace Corps, serving for two years in a small village in Mali, West...
